Instead of your homepage, visitors see a plain page that says "Account Suspended". Your email may have stopped too. This is your hosting company switching the account off, and it is usually reversible. Here are the four reasons it happens, how to find out which one is yours, and how to get back online without losing anything.
What "Account Suspended" means
Your website lives on a hosting account. When the host suspends that account, it stops serving your site and shows its own "Account Suspended" page instead. If your business email runs on the same hosting, that often stops too. Your files are not normally deleted at this point, but hosts only keep them for a limited time, so act quickly.
The four usual reasons
- The hosting bill was not paid. The most common one. The renewal invoice went to an old email address, or the card on file expired.
- The site used more than the plan allows. Too much storage, traffic or server load, often from a plugin gone wrong or a flood of bot traffic.
- Malware or spam. If the site was hacked and starts sending spam or hosting malicious files, hosts suspend it to protect their other customers.
- A breach of the host's terms. Content or activity the host does not allow.
Find out which one it is
- Check the email registered with the host, including spam, for suspension or invoice notices.
- Log in to the hosting billing area and look for unpaid invoices.
- If neither explains it, open a ticket with the host and ask for the exact reason and how long they keep the files.
Lost access to the hosting login or the email it is tied to? Recover the email first, because the host will send everything there.
Get back online
- Unpaid bill: pay the invoice. Most hosts restore the account within hours once payment clears.
- Over the limits: ask the host what was used, remove the cause (a broken plugin, oversized backups stored on the account) or move to a plan that fits.
- Malware or spam: the host will usually want the site cleaned before restoring it. Follow our plan for a hacked website, and change every password tied to the account.
- Terms breach: ask the host exactly what must change, fix it, and confirm in writing.
Keep it from happening again
- Up to date contact email on the hosting account, one that someone actually reads.
- Automatic renewal with a card that will not expire before the renewal date.
- Your own backup of the site and email, stored away from the host, so a suspension never means starting again.
- A regular check that the site is up and secure: start with the free website security check.
A suspension usually means nobody was watching the account. Once you are back online, it is a good moment to make sure someone is.
Common questions
Why does my website say "Account Suspended"?
Your hosting company has switched the account off. The usual reasons are an unpaid hosting bill, the account using more resources than the plan allows, malware or spam coming from the account, or a breach of the host's terms.
Will I lose my website if it is suspended?
Usually not straight away. Hosts normally keep the files for a period, but that period is limited, so ask the host how long they keep a suspended account and take a full backup as soon as it is restored.
How do I find out why my hosting was suspended?
Check the email address registered with the host for suspension or invoice notices, log in to the hosting billing area, and if neither explains it, open a ticket with the host and ask for the exact reason.
