WHOIS / Domain Lookup

Registrar, registration and expiry dates, status, and name servers for any domain.

Read-only and passive. We only query public records: no login, no port scanning, no exploitation.

What this checks

  • Queries the public RDAP registration service for your domain. RDAP is the structured successor to WHOIS.
  • Shows the registrar, the registration date, the expiry date and the date the record last changed.
  • Lists the domain's status codes, such as clientTransferProhibited.
  • Lists the name servers registered for the domain.

Why it matters

If a domain registration lapses, the website and every email address on it stop working, and the name can be registered by someone else. Many organisations only discover who registered their domain, and under whose account, when they need to renew it or move it. Knowing the registrar and expiry date, and that the domain is held in the organisation's own name, protects one of its most important assets.

How to read the result

  • The expiry date is the deadline. Renew well before it, as some registries delete expired names after a short grace period.
  • A status of clientTransferProhibited is a transfer lock, which is good: it stops the domain being moved without your approval.
  • If the registrar or name servers are not what you expect, someone else may control the account, such as a former developer.
  • Some domains, including many .co.zw names, do not publish RDAP data, so the tool will report no record. Ask your registrar directly in that case.

How to fix what it finds

  • Make sure the domain is registered to the organisation, with a shared role email address rather than one person's personal inbox.
  • Turn on auto renew and keep the payment method on the registrar account current.
  • Ask your registrar to enable a transfer lock, and turn on two-factor authentication for the registrar login.
  • Record the registrar, account owner and expiry date in your IT records so a staff change does not leave the domain orphaned.

Questions people ask

How do I check when my domain expires?

Enter the domain above and the expiry date is shown from the registry's RDAP record. If no record is returned, your registrar's control panel will show it.

Why does WHOIS not show the owner's name?

Most registries now redact personal contact details for privacy, so lookups show the registrar and dates but not the registrant. The registrar can confirm ownership to the account holder.

What happens if my domain expires?

The website and email stop resolving, usually within days. After any grace or redemption period the name can be released and registered by someone else, which is very hard to undo.
